What is a Concussion?
A concussion is a minor traumatic brain damage caused by a bump or blows to the head that impairs normal brain function. For example, a blow strong enough enough enough could result in a concussion. In addition, activities like hitting your head while doing a sport or playing can also cause a concussion.
How to Manage a Concussion
You can only manage or treat a concussion, depending on the severity of the case. Some of the ways we do recommend include the following;
To manage a concussion, you must rest from physical and mental activities. It means you will need lots of sleep to avoid thinking or doing anything that requires high mental energy. Therefore, a quiet environment is highly recommended.
Bright lights may hurt; however, it doesn’t mean you should be locked in the dark. Physical activities are limited; you will need to sit or lie in a position for hours, and you’ll need to be put out of school or your normal workload for a while. If you default on any of these, it can cause the concussion to worsen.
After a few days or weeks, you can resume mental and physical activities that do not require much energy. These include watching TV for a limited time and doing light exercises as long as they do not trigger the concussion.
However, you will continue to avoid sports or other activities that can likely cause a concussion until complete recovery. If you default on this, you might need surgery if there is a swell or bleed in your brain. You’ll also need therapies as recommended by your doctor.
You can also manage a concussion well when you avoid alcohol. If you should take alcohol, ask your doctor because it can react adversely with some medications, causing a slow recovery.
You will need lots of water while managing a concussion. Often, concussions come with vomiting, which can cause dehydration.
Diagnosis and Concussion Management
When your physiotherapist reviews your medical history and evaluates the signs and symptoms, you will have to answer questions about what caused your head injury.
At Granville Physiotherapy Clinic, there are different evaluations and test our physiotherapist will make you go through to get you up in no time. The symptoms of a concussion do not show up immediately. It may take hours or days. The evaluation will include the following;
You will go through some tests to check your cognitive (thinking) skills.
A brain scan is advised for patients with severe headaches, constant vomiting, and other concussion-related symptoms. So, a CT scan or MRI isn’t always needed when evaluating a concussion in its early stage. Most of the time, the effects of a concussion cannot be captured on a scan.
The symptoms become worse when bleeding in the skull or swelling in the brain is detected via brain imaging tests.
Adults are usually given a cranial computed tomography (CT) scan to evaluate the brain right after damage. This will display a cross-sectional image of your brain and skull with a series of X-rays. CT scans are only used for children with suspected concussions to protect them from radiation.
